"Skype a Scientist"

Pawel participated in a program which matches scientist with classrooms around the world. Scientists skype into the classroom for 30-60 minute Q and A sessions that cover the scientist’s expertise or what it’s like to be a scientist. Pawel talked to two classes from Virginia, USA and got some serious questions!

A day out!

Storm Callum did not stop us from going for a trip to Lickey hills in the outskirts of Birmingham. A six kilometres walk was followed by a dinner in a stylish pub in Barnt Green.

October 1, 2018

Our first alumni Shang Liang started PhD studies!

We are so proud! Shang Liang (2017 MSc 1:1) started PhD studies in Prof. Victoria Cowling lab in the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee. We wish you good luck and looking forward to discuss cap functions!

2nd birthday of our lab

We are 2yrs old! We established the lab, published 3 papers (and we have 2 still under revision), gave a few talks, started Birmingham RNA club, supervised 4 master students (3 of them finished with 1:1), 2 project students, 2 Erasmus students 4 summer students, received MIBTP PhD studentship and established 6 collaborations. We have been quite busy!

September 24, 2018

Onofrio officially started MIBTP PhD studies

For the next couple of months Onofrio will participate in series of lectures and practical courses which aim to strength up students skills in bioinformatics, statistics and interdisciplinary approaches. In January Onofrio will start his research rotation placement in Daniel Hebenstreit's lab at the University of Warwick following three months of industrial practise. Onofrio will be back in our lab in June to continue his research on cap-dependent transcription.

Another paper published - this time in Nucleic Acid Research

Our lab contributed to a paper elucidating roles for CPF and APT complexes in mRNA and snoRNA synthesis. The project was led by Patrick Cramer (Max Planck Institute, Göttingen) and Lori Passmore (MRC LMB, Cambridge).

September 17, 2018

New recruit!

Maya Wilson joined our lab to perform her MSci project. Maya will employ CRISPR-Cas9 system to overexpress or deplete mRNA 3' end processing factors in HEK 293T cells.

September 13-14, 2018

Wellcome Trust Researchers Meeting and Cells & Molecules seminar

Busy and very successful two days for our lab! Pawel travelled to the Wellcome Trust headquarter in London to participate in a meeting for Wellcome's funded researchers. The meeting familiarised us with the latests policy of the fund and also gave us an opportunity for networking with world-leading, UK-based scientists focused on molecular biology.

When Pawel was away, Onofrio gave an outstanding seminar at the Cells & Molecules research theme meeting.

End of the summer and new academic year ahead!

Our summer student Katie Oberheim and Erasmus student Silvia Talavera left our lab. We wish them all the best! With a new academic year we restart the Birmingham RNA Club, lab meetings and waiting for new students to join our lab!

RNA day

This is how our group celebrated first ever RNA Day!

There is no coincidence that the RNA society have chosen 1st AUG...

First paper from our lab is published in Nature Communications!

Our work reveals another mechanism differentiating synthesis of non-coding and coding RNA, in particular, small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA), essential ncRNA class involved in ribosome biogenesis. Our study revealed that cap structure is removed from pre-snoRNA precursor co-transcriptionally. We found that this process is essential for snoRNA exonucleolytic maturation, nuclear localisation and ultimately, snoRNA functions in ribosome synthesis. Thus, cap removal has emerged as one of the major factors directing snoRNA for ncRNA-specific maturation pathways.

Our work is mentioned on Biosciences and LES websites.

April 30, 2018

MSc student Kianoosh Sateri joined the lab.

His project is focused on generation of cell lines using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

January 02, 2018

Kinga's research from TH Jensen lab is published in Cell reports.

Kinga described roles for ZC3H18 protein in nuclear RNA metabolism. She found that ZC3H18 regulates transcription of some protein-coding genes and its phosphorylated from is associated with histone-coding genes.

You can find Kinga's paper here .
