What's happened recently?
We offer three competitive PhD studentship in the fields of transcription regulation in human cells, eukaryotic stress response and anti-viral drug development. Get in touch!
New academic year
The pandemic thrives but students are back on the campus. And it is the 4th lab anniversary... Wellcome new lab members, Monika, Aytaj and Anna.
We are up and running
All lab members are back in the campus. We follow strict social distancing rules and adjusted our working patterns to make our working environment safe.
2nd RNA in your salon webinar
This time Claudia Ribeiro de Almeida from Babraham Institute gave an excellent talk for our RNA salon.
We join the fight against Covid-19
We have started a collaboration with Prof Hannon from the School of Chemistry, to elucidate how small molecules may affect the structure of the SARS-CoV-2 5' untranslated regions (UTRs).
1st RNA in your salon webinar
We have moved online now! Our "Midlands RNA Salon" transformed into "Midlands RNA in your salon". The event was so popular that we made it open for everyone.
Charlotte Lal's outstanding viva
Our MSci student Charlotte passed her viva. 1st class!!!!
On Fridays, our lab members compete in answering tricky questions. For every session, we have a dress code as well...
Grzechnik lab social club
The labs are shut down but we continue our work from home. We use this time to broaden our knowledge and learn new skills. We meet online twice a week. And let's be honest, we don't speak about science only!
University shut down
Due to the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Birmingham shut down all labs on the campus. We will come back full of ideas and motivations!
2nd Midlands RNA Salon
A hurricane could not stop the RNA community! This time we traveled to Nottingham where we hosted more than 60 RNA enthusiasts. Pawel gave a talk which was followed by Kinga's closing remarks.
Grant from FPWR
Our grant application to the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research has been successful! We will investigate how the synthesis of PWS-related ncRNAs in stem cells regulates gene expression and cellular differentiation.
24-26 and 29-30.01.20
Busy start of 2020
We kicked off the new year by attending two meetings. First, Pawel and Onofrio participated in the RNA UK in the Lake District. Two days later Pawel joined other Wellcome Trust-funded scientists to discuss molecular mechanisms in health and disease.
Kinga's new paper
Kinga added one more paper to her record. She published a book chapter about genome engineering and proteomics methods that she employed during her PhD studies at the Rockefeller University. The article can be found here.
1st Midlands RNA Salon
We did it! Our lab organised the first meeting for RNA enthusiasts from Birmingham, Nottingham, Leicester and Warwick. It was great to see more than 70 people coming to Biosciences and participating in the event!
BAKE OFF WINNERS
During the last month members of the labs located on the 5th floor competed in sweet and savory baking. Our lab came in the top second year in a row! Kinga won the competition and Holly took second place!
Something spooky has appeared on the fridge...
MIDLANDS RNA SALON
Our lab members will organize and lead Midlands RNA salon, a series of seminars between Universities of Birmingham, Warwick, Leicester, and Nottingham. RNA salon will be sponsored by the RNA Society and Lexogen.
LAB RETREAT IN OXFORD
We spent two days admiring the city, playing games, discussing science and enjoying our company.
Onofrio rocked Cells and Molecules research theme with his direct 4sU-seq in yeast!
0UR PROTOCOL PUBLISHED IN JOVE
We showed how quickly analyze rRNA methylation using short DNA oligonucleotides. On the picture: Kinga enjoying shooting of the video protocol.
TRANSCRIPTION MEETING AT CSHL
Regulation of eukaryotic transcription at the Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory. 5 days of inspiring science!
AWARD FOR MAYA
Maya Wilson won the Best MSci Project award! Congratulations to Maya and her supervisor Kinga! Maya will now continue her career as a PhD student at King's College.
The lab participated in second Birmingham Centre for Genome Biology Meeting. On the picture, we are with our scientific father/grandfather Nick Proudfoot.
Kinga presented outcomes of her project for Cells and Molecules research theme.
PAWEL PRESENTED AT REMIX
Pawel gave a talk in MRC Mitochondrial Unit, University of Cambridge. The seminar was a part of the REMIX project.
SCHOLARSHIP FOR HOLLY
Holly has been awarded the prestigious Biomedical Vacation Scholarship from Wellcome Trust. Well done!
